    The Mount Soledad Christian Cross stands on an 822 feet hill in the eastern side of La Jolla. Erected in 1913, as a prominent landmark. Twice replaced, with the final 29-foot cross erected in 1954. Finally, a war memorial built around it and named the “Mount Soledad Veterans War Memorial”.

    La Jolla Playhouse founded by Hollywood actors Gregory Peck, Mel Ferrer, and Dorothy McGuire in 1947. By 1959, it closed but revived in 1983 as part of the UCSD campus. Three theaters exist on the property: Potiker Theater, Mandell Weiss Forum, and the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

    Museum of Contemporary Art of San Diego since 1941 formerly the home of Ellen Browning Scripps. It includes a permanent collection of over 3,000 post-1950 American and European works of art.

    Hennessey’s La Jolla, an Irish joint serving traditional Irish cuisine. But, their famous Moo Cluck Oink! Burger comes with a fried egg, cheddar cheese, and crispy bacon.

    Torrey Pines, tucked-away behind the Whole Foods Market offers casual dining and a great place to hang out and drink good beers.

    La Jolla Schools

     

     

    Served by the San Diego Unified School District. The main schools earning high ratings by the Great Schools Organization include:

    Bird Rock Elementary rated 10 (out of 10) teaching grades K-5 to around 450 students with students rated a 10 for Test Scores and Equity. Also, rated a 9 for Academic Progress.

    La Jolla Elementary School also rated a 10 teaching grades K-5 to around 570 students with students receiving a 10 for Test Scores, Equity, and Low-Income students.

    Muirlands Middle School rated a 9 teaching grades 6-8 to about 920 students with students rated a 10 for Test Scores. Also, their students rated an 8 for Equity, Low Income, and Academic Progress.

    Preuss School, a public charter school rated a 9 overall. Also, rated a 9 for Test Scores, Equity, and Low-Income students.

    La Jolla High School rated a 9 overall teaching grades 9-12 to around 1,400 students. Plus, a 10 for College Readiness and a 9 for Test Scores.

    The Bishop’s School, a prep school receiving high ratings from parents, but private schools not rated by the Great Schools Organization.
